Revision advice

Reading Comprehension

Ask for Authentik Reading Compehension booklets if you do not already have one. Beyond that keep reading articles and texts in French, checking vocabulary etc. Do not forget that we also have a subscription to the online version of Authentik which has lots of addditional exercises - ask me if you do not have the password. The link is on the front page of my web site.

 Grammar

By far the hardest area to ‘revise’, but I would advise the folllowing:

  • Establish and keep a log of all grammatical ‘issues’ encountered this year when writing French and translating - bring any unresolved questions to class for explanation.
  • Make a list of the 15 or 20 major types of mistakes you make and the ’solutions’ to each (otherwise known as your ‘resolutions’) with some examples eg:
    •
      • Problem: ‘problème’ (along with système and thème) is masculine
      • Resolution: I will never forget, so ce problème, le problème, un problème, la solution au problème …..!
  • Practice any outstanding problematic areas using online exercises - I would recommend this especially for conjugation of verbs. The link to some serious exercises is in the Links tab above.

Listening Comprehension

This is where the net comes into its own. As well as the Baccalauréat site (see link to the right) which you should all be familiar with to practice with videos, do not forget the listening exercises on the Radio France International site which has a huge amount of material to practice comprehension.

Writing

Here are a few practical suggestions:

  • Make sure you know your topics inside out- re-read articles and check news for new developments
  • Make lists of key facts or ideas by theme/topic
  • Make your own vocab lists
  • Reduce key ideas to headings on an A4 sheet for each sub topic
  • Write practice essays in an hour - by all means send them in for comment
  •  make sure you have a range of means of ensuring examiners ‘get the message’ about personal reaction!

Can I encourage you to share any advice or suggestions to each other via the comments tab?

Les 35 heures

Posted by plangdale on March 3, 2008

Le concept des 35 heures de travail par semaine pour les salariés est un élément clé du droit du travail en France, souvent contesté par les employeurs, soutenu et défendu par les syndicats.

Pour en savoir davantage, vous pouvez consulter la page de France 5 métiers

Et pour voir ce qu’en pense M. Sarkosy, regardez cet interview:

Y and EN

Posted by plangdale on January 29, 2008

We are working this week on when to use the pronouns Y and EN.

For straightforward explanations and examples of the use of each (in French) to supplement those in your grammar book click Y and EN

To go directly to selected interactive exercises on this topic on the net click here for the index page.  All these exercises ask you to choose which pronoun to use in different situations.

Et finalement …… can anyone give me a coherent explanation of the function each of  Y and EN in the statement “Il y en a qui comprennent la question, et d’autres……”? Answers in a comment…..
